Why this Pixel ID thing rules.

Thu Aug 2, 2007, 12:49 PM
So, for anyone who's been living underneath some sort of heavy boulder, pixel IDs were (from what I have managed to discern) :iconfayrenpickpocket:'s and :iconscrotumnose: idea.
Originally started by them, along with :iconendling:, :iconvert-is-ninja:, :iconzeroxtb:, :iconshikakusuika:, :iconrobotnicc: and :icongunnerromantic:.

Essentially (for the rock-dwellers among you), you're supposed to draw yourself as a character from a fighting game. Complete with stats, a portrait and, of course, the sprite. And it's AMAZINGLY fun! So fun, in fact, that hundreds more started making their own pixel IDs.

Everybody must make one!
(here's mine)

:iconpixelids: created an account to gather them all in one place. Right now, it seems the list was so long it collapsed onto itself ;P

Why has this become such a phenomenon?
The greatest thing about the pixel ID is that it's a challenging endeavor. It blends many different kinds of art. First of all, let's face it... who has tried pixel art before?
Besides the sprite, though, you're supposed to draw a portrait, design something for the background, plus come up with stats and a catch phrase. Every part requires some amount of conscious deliberation, making completing your own all the more satisfying.
The key, though, lies in the fact that it isn't too challenging. It's not intimidating, otherwise it wouldn't have become so popular. In fact, you can get pretty decent results on your first try. It's surprising how much you can squeeze out of just a few pixels. Furthermore, it's not a contest, which eliminates the fear of "mine not being good enough". Everyone is invited, no-- impelled to participate. There's this feeling that we're all creating something bigger, together.
It's also an incredibly fresh idea. Aside from the novelty of trying your hand at pixel art, imagining oneself as a beat' em up character has a strange appeal. As a matter of fact, it's hard not to be original with a prompt like that. You're allowed to express things about yourself that wouldn't fit in a "normal" self-portrait. Ideas that would seem "odd" elsewhere are perfectly at home within the fighting game context.

Finally, everyone's doing it now. It lends a sense of belonging. It's not just a trend, anymore, it has become a dA rite of passage and I, for one, can say that I've never been happier to be a member of this community.

what a wonderfully flattering journal. seriously.

and i agree with all of your points! it's something that's challenging, but the pressure is somehow taken off, because so many people are doing it, and a lot of them are new to pixels as well. it's like a grand learning experience.

and for more obvious reasons, yeah... who WOULDN'T wanna see themselves as a video game character? :P (im a huge video game geek myself, this question is utterly pointless to ask from my standpoint)

the idea was an idea that me and :iconfayrenpickpocket: were tossing around. i thought it was gonna be one of those things that you keep on saying 'ahh that'd be cool', but never come into fruition. then, like a day after, she decided to just start making it. and then i saw it and was totally out of breath. i literally stopped everything i was doing and then made mine, and got :iconendling: and :iconvert-is-ninja: to make one as well.

:iconzeroxtb: is also a fan of the VIDYAGAMES so i thought he would be, like, the perfect addition to the roster. and he just jumped on it when i asked him if he wanted in... it was so awesome! this made us (me and :iconendling) wanna recruit some of our closer dA buddies to join in on this madness. i got :iconrobotnicc: to join in, and :iconendling: got :iconshikakusuika: and :icongunnerromantic: to join in. we were going to make a character select screen out of it, but things just got busy between a lot of us (this was in may i believe). THEN. two months later, :iconfayrenpickpocket: was telling me how she wanted a new ID, and i suggested the pixel one, and we decided to modify it a bit and submit at the same time because we were impatient and wanted to jump the gun.

THEN it just spread. it's really crazy and awesome, and a lot of it is because of :icondelya:, because she compiled all of them initially. now, someone has stepped up and made a separate account for it, and well, that's the point we're at now!

this was great to read, it's nice to see someone really looking deep and finding something meaningful from a little nothing-project between four friends that wanted to be geeky and have the same IDs.

thanks again!

Awwwww, this IS wonderfully flattering. I can't take the credit for coming up with the idea. So many people were involved to inspire the concept. It's amazing to see how much it's grown, and I'm so glad that people are having such FUN with it. That's the best part. :D <3
No sir, thank you ;P

Good to have the historical background. Each one of you was being so polite and all "oh, well, (s)he deserves the credit more than I do" and so on that it was kinda hard to get to the truth...

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I seriously had amazing fun making my ID.

Can't wait for the selection screen! XD

I edited it to credit you both for the idea. Like I said below, it was hard getting to the truth what with everyone being so polite and all.

And, I agree, the best thing about it is how much honest FUN everyone's is having with the idea.
